The following texts and instructional materials were chosen by Notre Dame Catholic School for their high-quality academic value and methodologies.

Early Childhood (EC) Ages 3-4

  • The EC program uses learning centers as a basis for independent activities and games, all associated with the monthly unit of study. Children are introduced to letter sounds of the alphabet, numeral and quantity identification.

Language Arts
Language arts includes reading/literature, grammar and usage, poetry, writing, spelling, vocabulary and penmanship.

Reading / Literature

  • Kindergarten: “Beginning to Read, Write and Listen” by Macmillian/McGraw-Hill
  • Grades 1-5: Houghton Mifflin reading series
  • Grades 6 & 8: “The Language of Literature” by McDougal Little
  • Grade 7: “Timeless Themes” by Prentice Hall

Grammar / Usage

  • Grades 1-2: grammar included in reading series
  • Grades 3-8: “Voyages in English” and “Exercises in English” by Loyola

Vocabulary

  • Grades 1-2: vocabulary included in reading texts
  • Grades 3-8: Sadlier-Oxford vocabulary program

Penmanship

  • Grades 1-3: Zaner Bloser series

Composition Writing

  • Grades 4-5: Zaner Bloser series

Phonics

  • Grades K-3: phonics included in reading texts

Mathematics

  • Grades K-3 & 5: “Progress in Mathematics” by Sadlier-Oxford
  • Grade 4: “Math Times” by Houghton Mifflin
  • Grade 6-8: Glencoe Math, Course 1 and 2, Glencoe Pre-algebra and Algebra

Social Studies

  • Grades 1-3: McGraw-Hill series
  • Grades 4-5: Harcourt Brace series
  • Grades 6-8: “Our World Today” and “American History” by Glencoe

Science

  • Grades 1-5: McGraw-Hill series
  • Grades 6-8: Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science by Glencoe

Computer

  • Grades K-8: Hands on computer use, keyboarding program, Kidspiration and Inspiration, PowerPoint, web searching, word processing and spreadsheets

Physical Education

  • Grades EC3-8: Structured activities from one to three times a week for fine and gross motor development taught with drill, exercise and proficiency activities

Health

  • Grades 4 & 5: Instruction on nutrition, proper rest, exercise, overall physical well being and safe environment
  • Grade 6-8: Full day retreats covering health, family life and safe environment

Spanish

  • Grades EC3-5: Instruction from once to twice a week
  • Grade 6: “Bien Vieje” text
  • Grades 7-8: “Paso A Paso” by Scott Foresman
